St.ART Walking Tour

On a warm breezy day the mom and I decided to go down to St. Stephen's Plaza at 5th & Main to get ourselves a tour of some of the Art in Public Places in downtown Longmont.
It was just the two of us with our tour guide Lauren, so it was a casual chatty stroll through Longmont.
It looks as though I may have said something silly to Lauren...I'm not sure.

We started off in St. Stephen's Plaza where you might have seen the big macaroni fork called...guess what? "Say Cheese!" (Which I did...)

There are additional pieces as you wander to the back side of the plaza; it should look awesome once the alley work is completed. If you want to see these and the big fork now is the time to go. These are temporary pieces (a.k.a. Art on the Move) and will be swapped out in early June. There is also a large mosaic on the wall, which you may not have seen on your trips up and down Main St., which is a permanent fixture at the plaza.

From there we walked down to Collyer Park to see the buffalo carving called, "Front Range." He's pretty darn cute for a buffalo carved in to a tree.

Half the fun of walking through downtown neighborhoods is seeing the homes and gardens. The coolest houses in town are in the Historic or maybe quasi-historic neighborhoods. You can always find cool colors and amazing flowers somewhere on those streets.

We walked to the library where there is a sweet memorial statue at the back of the building and the train that greets you at the entrance of the library.

I don't recall ever being in the Civic Center before but there's art in there as well. One of the Longmont geese lives in this building and it's definitely one of my favorites! It represents Longmont's sister cities in Mexico and Japan.

Two pieces I'd never noticed or wouldn't have seen anyway (since I don't often have trouble with the law...) are at the Longmont Police Dept. If you're in the neighborhood look up at the clock and you'll see a large mosaic, and if you're a little closer there's a sculpture near the entrance that I think looks like bird condos.

There's so much art to see downtown that we certainly take for granted as we drive by. Take a moment next time you're down there to appreciate the hard work of our Colorado artists.
Or better yet, go join Lauren for one of her walking or biking tours!
Check the schedule for upcoming tours.
