Clean Up, Green Up!

Last Friday mom and I volunteered for the Clean Up, Green Up project with the LDDA (Longmont Downtown Development Authority.)
I believe it was the first volunteer group to participate in this. There was a second round of volunteers coming in on Saturday morning as well.
We met our fellow volunteers at the Downtown Longmont offices for a lunch of 7 West pizza, veggies, drinks, and snacks. In addition to me and mum there was a small church group, a mom-kids-grandma group calling themselves Green Machine, a guy trio called Gears Guys, and a couple of independent ladies, as well as a few of the LDDA staff members.
We got free Clean & Green t-shirts, pens, and got to sign up for a Downtown Longmont drawing for a $50 gift card. (Winners have not been announced yet. Me me me me!)
Mom and I were assigned to clean the kiosks placed on each block that used to contain the downtown directories. We got a bucket o' supplies and were on our way. We cleaned 6 kiosks from top to bottom as well as the very dusty and dirty newspaper stands in front of Janie's Cafe. The other groups were cleaning up St. Stephen's plaza, picking up trash, cleaning trash cans, and the fellas got to scrape gum and ArtWalk footprints off the sidewalks.
Mom commented that she was glad they didn't have us wearing orange or people would think we were doing manditory community service. But I really don't think we look too shady out there with our citrus disinfectant and little red towels.
Some of the downtown businesses didn't know why we were there, but they seemed to be ok with it since we were cleaning. It would have been nice to have a few people we didn't know to work with, since part of the fun of these things is meeting new peoplem but mom and I are a good cleaning team. I get the stuff she can't reach and she gets the stuff on the bottom.
A fun day out in the sun and wind, even though mom and I disinfected each other several times, and
I'll certianly look for it again next year and maybe try to recruit a bigger team...?
It would be very neat if this could expand in to a sort of city-wide volunteer event with lots of people participating. If you've helped clean up your own streets you can take a little pride in how your city looks and help keep it clean and green all year long.

Side note: One of the snacks they had for us were Newtons Fruit Crisps, apple cinnamon flavor. Oh I love it! Kinda like a Poptart and a granola bar had a baby. ~yum~
